Розкопки археологів на Замковій горі і в парку Високий Замок виявили культурний шар часів Київської Русі Х—ХІІ ст. Наслідки археологічних досліджень укупі з вивченням свідчень писемних пам'яток дають підстави вважати, що Львів як замок у системі фортифікацій Галицько-Волинського князівства був збудований Данилом Романовичем на місці давньоруського "городка", що існував на Замковій горі з XII чи навіть XI ст.
