У середині XIII ст. було закладено Львів - місто, якому судилося відіграти визначну роль в історії Галицько-Волинської Русі, а згодом і України. Проте в початковий період свого існування він був невеликим містом-фортецею і тому згадується у літописах нечасто. Ні докладний час, ні обставини виникнення міста не знайшли відображення в пам'ятках середньовічної писемності.

Уперше Львів згадується в Галицько-Волинському літописімимохідь, під час опису грандіозної пожежі в Холмі, яка й поглинула всю увагу книжника: "Трапилось так за гріхи наші, що Холм загорівся від окаянної баби...
