Уперше Львів згадується в Галицько-Волинському літописімимохідь, під час опису грандіозної пожежі в Холмі, яка й поглинула всю увагу книжника: "Трапилось так за гріхи наші, що Холм загорівся від окаянної баби... Полум'я було таке (величезне), що по всій землі було видно заграву; навіть із Львова дивившись, було видно по полях Белзьких..." Пожежа сталася близько 1256 р.
Історики висловлювали різні думки з приводу можливого часу заснування Львова. Найбільш прийнятним видається висновок І. Крип'якевича, згідно з яким Львів заклали на честь весілля Лева Даниловича з угорською принцесою Констанцією. Цей династичний шлюб відбувся 1247 р.
Подібно до Києва, Галича, та й абсолютної більшості давньоруських міст, Львів виріс не на порожньому місці. Розкопки археологів на Замковій горі і в парку Високий Замок виявили культурний шар часів Київської Русі Х—ХІІ ст. Наслідки археологічних досліджень укупі з вивченням свідчень писемних пам'яток дають підстави вважати, що Львів як замок у системі фортифікацій Галицько-Волинського князівства був збудований Данилом Романовичем на місці давньоруського "городка", що існував на Замковій горі з XII чи навіть XI ст.
